The Holy or the Broken (S1, E7)

Lauren Le Roux

LAUREN LE ROUX is a singer/songwriter, host of the Messy Bun Girls podcast, and a volunteer vocalist with Crossroads Church in Cincinnati,  Ohio.

Lauren and I talk about the craft of writing praise and worship songs and the inherent challenges of writing not only for an audience but for someone else to sing along with as well. We discuss the power that music has to invoke memories; why the Bible commands believers to “Make a joyful noise,” not “Sing on pitch”; and remind listeners that drums and tambourines aren’t a sacrilege: they’re some of the oldest instruments known to man.

I also review the book The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of Hallelujah by Alan Light and wonder about the moment a song transcends its original intent and becomes part of our cultural vernacular.

Artists mentioned in this episode:

Plus songs including All Along the Watchtower; Amazing Grace; Cat’s in the Cradle; Hallelujah; Summertime.
